The story

A sun hat from the middle of the 1950s, woven from natural straw in a close, even plait that has kept its shape for seventy years. The brim is wide and soft, and it dips a little at the front and back, so it shades the eyes and the neck at once. The crown is low and round. Hold it up to the light and you can see how carefully the rows were sewn together, each one overlapping the last. It weighs almost nothing. Wear it in the garden, at the beach, or through a long lunch outside.
